The People’s Choice Awards: My Top 5

Mayim shares highlights from the event

On January 6, Mayim attended the People’s Choice Awards with her costars – The Big Bang Theory received top honors for “Favorite TV Show”  and “Favorite Network TV Comedy” for the fourth consecutive year, and  Jim Parsons won “Favorite Comedic TV Actor.” Here is a rundown of Mayim’s top five things she loved about this year’s PCAs:

  1. Social time with the cast. The seven of us on TBBT work together nine months a year for 24 episodes of good times. We are together a lot, but in a very specific way: we work on scripts together, we rehearse scenes, and we film scenes in front of a live audience. Awards shows like The People’s Choice Awards allow us to get to know each other outside of work. It’s not like our job is so stressful that we never get to have social time. And many of us socialize during breaks or lunchtime in each other’s dressing rooms. But being outside of one’s workplace allows for a different set of conversations. We talk more about our personal lives rather than our business lives. We have a drink and eat a meal together after awards shows like this and we get to just hang out and be more friends than co-workers. Not everyone brings a date to every awards show, but those that do get to have their date get to hang out with the rest of us and that’s neat, too!
  2. Social time with the writers and producers. Our writing and producing staff is a motley crew of awesomeness. They are all very bright and very funny, and everyone is very friendly and relaxed when we go to these kinds of things. At work, our writers write all day in a room together and we see them for the run-through of the episode which we do for them every afternoon. But that’s only 45 minutes or so of interaction with them that we get. At this kind of awards show, we get to mingle and chat with them. Many of our writers have kids, and sometimes we talk about kids together. A few writers and I talked Star Wars: Episode 7 at the People’s Choice Awards of course, since pretty much all of our writers are Star Wars fans!
  3. Working with a new dress designer. I worked with a designer named Natalie Chapman for the People’s Choice Awards. She designed that dress from scratch based on the requirements my stylist Adena Rohatiner gave her. I prefer long sleeves and a dress that hits at least at the knee. I generally don’t like bright colors, but especially since my father passed away in April, I favor dark or muted colors. And “I ain’t no size 2” and never will be so that’s a major challenge believe it or not for designers in Hollywood. Most all of the women you see are what is called a “sample size” and pretty much every style looks good on a body that has few curves. So Natalie had a list of my “issues,” as it were, and in two fittings she crafted this dress. First and foremost, I felt comfortable in this dress which is really important for me. I’m not really “into” fashion and a lot of fashion is about being uncomfortable because that’s what ends up looking trendy and good. This dress involved very little sucking in of the stomach – the dress was waistless as a matter of fact! – and it was pretty easy to wear. Thank you, Natalie!
  4. Low heels. This awards show came after our winter hiatus, during which I literally had not worn make-up or high heels for a month. I sat on my couch, spent time with my kids, and napped a lot. So coming back to an awards show after a hiatus was shocking to my system. Low heels helped a lot! Adena typically prefers me in a 4 1/2” heel, or a 4” heel. I can handle 5” for a short event, but not an awards show, and the heels I wore to The People’s Choice Awards were maybe 3″ or 3 1/2”. So comfy! Felt like I was in slippers since I am so used to having to wear a much higher heel. An inch makes a big difference, let me tell you!
  5. Winning. Winning this award means our fans like us a lot. It means a lot to us, truly. Kaley spoke for us beautifully and she was totally right on the money. We love making people smile in a world that often makes you cry. We love the magic our writers help us make for you, and we are grateful to be the people’s choice this year!

Thanks for your support of our show and our writers and producers and the entire staff and crew that brings you The Big Bang Theory!
