Most parents have been there – frustrated with their children, upset that warnings and other forms of discipline haven’t worked. They’re even tempted to get physical with their children. But in this week’s video, Mayim tells you why she thinks this is the wrong method to discipline children: because the science is on the side of not hitting children, even when other methods fail.

Mayim explains that most humans – like animals – operate on the pleasure principle, seeking out pleasurable activities and avoiding painful ones. So creating a pain response to a misbehavior means that they’ll avoid the behavior, but not necessarily obey.

There are rules against hitting other adults, or strangers, or dogs, but why isn’t there a rule against hitting a child? We hit because we run out of patience, Mayim says, but the goal of discipline should be to work toward setting and enforcing boundaries, showing compassion and love for our children.
