Things I Hadn’t Realized Before the Emmys

An educational morning-after-Emmys list from Mayim Bialik

(Editor’s note: If you haven’t read our “Team Mayim, Assemble” post, in which we introduce members of the pre-Emmys team, go there now, so you’ll know the cast of characters. 🙂 And now, Mayim’s reflections on her Emmys experience!)
  • There can be too many lipstick choices. Seriously. (I mean, look at the photo.) They all look fine and good. I can’t really pick things like that. I basically threw my hands up and let stylist Adena Rohatiner and make-up lady Linda pick.

  • A pair of SPANX which looks like they could fit on my cat can, in fact, stretch enough to fit on my body.
  • Paying respects to my father’s grave the morning of the Emmys gave me perspective for the day and a sense of connection to Something bigger than me.
  • If it’s 95 degrees out and you’re in a long-sleeved, tight dress, your body will produce enough sweat to make you look like a bucket of water has been poured over you. I’m told I didn’t look sweaty in my red carpet interviews, but I’m kind of thinking all of the people saying that are just being kind. It was hot on that carpet!
  • There’s no shame in realizing that the gentleman you’ve extended your hand to to help you get down off of a few stairs on the red carpet is Adrien Brody. I almost withdrew my hand when I realized it was him, but then I figured, hey, he’s standing there, I need to get down off of these stairs, he’s a person, I’m a person, we’re good. Thank you, Adrien Brody for the hand!
  • Not winning may not be the same as losing, but it kind of feels like it. It doesn’t feel good to not win, or to lose. Of course it’s an honor to just be nominated, of course it’s awesome to just be there. But don’t let yourself be fooled: it’s a lot of pressure and attention placed on winning – or not winning, as the case may be!
  • It really is all ok. Months of preparation paid off for a walk down the carpet that my publicist works her butt off in order to execute. I took pictures. I did interviews on shows my mom can see and enjoy. My hair and make-up and styling team was pleased. I didn’t trip and fall at any time. My super high heels (thank you Renee Caovilla) lasted for hours and hours with me strutting my stuff. I didn’t lose any of the jewelry I was wearing. I was home and in bed by 10.30 and today I get my kids back and my life back too.
“Please ensure that this year’s Emmy nominees are placed gently at the curb for post-show pickup.” (Editor’s note: We’re kidding.)
Thank you for being a part of Emmys 2015, and thank you for cheering me on. It’s not about winning or losing. It’s about how you play the game. And we played it well, all! We played it well. (And now, it’s time for the Season Premiere of “The Big Bang Theory…” – check CBS.com for local broadcast times.)
