The year was 1989, and Michael Jackson’s mega-smash album Bad had been burning up the charts since its release in 1987. The ninth single from that album, “Liberian Girl,” had a video (directed by superstar producer Quincy Jones) into which celebrities of the day—Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Richard Dreyfuss, Amy Irving, Steven Spielberg, Paula Abdul etc—were packed like sardines.
