We want to have meaningful conversations at Grok Nation. And to that end we are kicking off a new recurring feature called “5 Deep Questions,” where we will ask a celebrity exactly that: five questions that make them think. And hopefully get answers that make us think as well. We’re so excited to kick off the inaugural article with Rachel Bloom. We love the multihyphenate star and her CW drama Crazy-Ex Girlfriend, and we love her even more after she answered these five deep questions…

  1. Do you believe in God?
I like to say I’m a practical atheist and a spiritual agnostic; I live my day-to-day life as if I am solely in charge of my own fate and I am kind to others not to please some sort of spirit watching over me but because it makes my life better and makes society function better. But, on a universal and theoretical level, what the fuck do I know? There’s so much we don’t know about the universe, so I’m completely open to the idea that anything is possible.
  2. What do you think happens when we die?
I think we live on through our actions and how people remember us. Although I don’t believe our consciousness continues, I’m excited for the energy in my brain and body to go back to the universe from whence it came.
  3. What were you like as a teenager?
I was bubbly and ambitious with spurts of sadness and anxiety that I would cover up by being even more bubbly and ambitious.
  4. What are you passionate about right now?
I’m really passionate in making art that helps people see the humanity in everyone, especially people they don’t understand.
  5. Why did you choose to make mental health the focus of your show?
Since the show was always, as my writing partner says, an “unromantic romantic comedy,” looking at the deep reasons behind my character’s actions was always a major element to the show.
