Vlog #27: Losing my voice

Mayim's doctor has ordered her to rest her voice for a month, prompting a reflection on the value of her voice

Have you ever thought about the value of your voice? And what you would do if you lost it? From your written voice to your spoken voice, from singing to expressing your opinions to communicating with other people in the world, most people take their voices for granted. But this new video explores Mayim’s relationship with her voice, and the moments in which it gets stronger and then weaker. (And this video also uses an ASL – American Sign Language – interpreter, too…a GrokNation first!!)

Over the course of her life, Mayim has lost and found her voice many times, both literally and figuratively. She identifies her naturally raspy voice as being closely connected to her late father, who had polyps on his vocal cords which he had to have removed when he was in his 40s; then Mayim discovered that she was not using her voice correctly and she has repeatedly sprained her vocal cords. Her voice has gotten better, then worse, over the course of years and at various important – and/or stressful – moments.

Now she’s under orders to rest her voice for the next month; here’s her video reflection on the value of her voice.
