Vlog #17 – Mayim Meets Indiana Jones: Reviewing “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981)

After inexplicably never having seen this epic film until now, Mayim offers an exuberant review

Those of us who know and love Mayim also know that she isn’t really a massive consumer of popular culture – she doesn’t have a TV, doesn’t get to a lot of movies, etc. Many of you were surprised to learn that she hadn’t seen “The Little Mermaid,” and some of you were doubly shocked when she eviscerated the beloved Disney film in her review, in a vlog segment she called “Late to the Party with Mayim.” Now she takes on “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” which – despite its Spielberg and Lucas pedigree – had escaped Mayim’s eyes until now. When Editor Esther learned Mayim was bringing back this segment and that the featured film was “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” she was shocked – HOW HAD MAYIM NEVER SEEN THIS MOVIE???- and nervous – what if Mayim didn’t like this movie either??? (Unconfirmed sources report that Esther knows most of this movie by heart.)

Luckily, this film was a certified hit with Mayim, and in the above video she tells you why: predictably, Harrison Ford and the adventurous professor Indiana Jones character figure in prominently, but she likes other things too. Don’t miss this video, about 50% of which is Mayim describing how hunky young Harrison Ford is. She is not wrong.

And since you’ve scrolled this far, some Indiana Jones trivia for you:

  • The man who tries to abandon Indiana Jones in the opening artifact rescue scene is played by Alfred Molina, who you know from many roles ranging from dramatic (Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2) to comedic (Dr. Edelweiss, the inappropriate coroner on Angie Tribeca) to Broadway, where he played Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof.”
  • Indy’s Egyptian friend Sallah is played by John Rhys-Davies, who some of  you “Lord of the Rings” fans may recognize as Gimli.
  • And for the hardcore Harry Potterheads, Captain Katanga  is played by George Harris, who is one of two actors to play Kingsley Shacklebolt (an Auror and friend of Mr. Weasley’s) in the Harry Potter film series.
